Art lovers in New York can rejoice as an integral space of art history is up for rent. Recently hitting the real estate market is the iconic final apartment where Jean-Michel Basquiat lived and worked. The neo-expressionist painter dwelled in this space between 1983 to 1988. He lived here until he died of an accidental overdose at the mere age of 27.

Not only that, the apartment has some more cultural and artistic significance. It is also a space that Andy Warhol (Basquiat’s mentor) used as his living and creative quarters, as per Hypebeast.

Positioned in the Bowery of Manhattan is the historic apartment. Warhol bought this space in the year 1970. Before his purchase, it belonged to gangster Paul Kelly. The home has seen many legendary owners who ended up becoming icons in their respective areas.

According to Art News, the space is described by the real estate agency Meridian Capital Group as an open loft space with high ceilings and multiple skylights. This sounds like the ideal space to create art, given its history. And Meridian Group has shown interest in retaining the space for the art community.

The exterior of the building is decorated with street art and graffiti as a tribute to Basquiat. The asking rate to rent out the home is said to be a total of $60,000, out of which $51,000 is rent, and the rest goes as taxes. The apartment is available purely for commercial use, and the minimum period of tenure is ten years.

The interior of the space spans across three floors, totaling an expansive 6,600 square feet. And it retains its artistic charm, with its minimalism, and its light-filled high-ceiling rooms.
