Two years after their weddings – yes, plural, one in Las Vegas and a second in Georgia – the couple separated. The divorce was finalised in January 2025. A few months later, Ben Affleck has finally addressed his split from Lopez.
Ben Affleck opens up about divorce from Jennifer Lopez
As reported by People, Ben Affleck, who has talked about his drinking problems, sat for an interview with GQ for their April issue. The interview covers a wide range of topics, including his relationship, and its eventual end, with Jennifer Lopez.
When talking about the filming of the documentary that JLo put out, The Greatest Love Story, the Batman actor explained that Lopez ‘handled celebrity more adeptly’ than he did, but that was not a point of contention in their relationship. He admits he is ‘more reserved’ than his ex-wife, but like most relationships, ‘you don’t always have the same attitude towards these things’.
Despite their different attitudes, Affleck supported Lopez as he knew what he was getting into.
You don’t marry a ship captain and then say, "Well, I don’t like going out in the water." You’ve got to own what you knew going into any relationship.
The actor makes a point of emphasising that this difference ‘wasn’t the cause of some major fracture’. He goes on to add that he doesn’t mind talking about his private life ‘as long as my actual feelings, intentions and beliefs are communicated’.
Finally, Affleck addresses the reason why he and Lopez divorced, explaining that ‘there’s no scandal’.
But honestly... the truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.
There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue. The truth is, when you talk to somebody, ‘Hey, what happened?’ Well, there is no, ‘This is what happened.’
He added:
It’s just a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships in ways that we all sort of normally do.
Ben Affleck talks about co-parenting with Jennifer Garner
In the same interview with GQ, Ben Affleck talks about co-parenting with his ex, Jennifer Garner. They have three children together: Violet, 19 - who looks just like her mother - Seraphina, 16, and Samuel, 13. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner were married from 2005 to 2018.
He explained that he and Garner ‘have a really good co-parenting relationship’ and he is ‘lucky’ that they ‘work together really well’.
And I’m really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids’ mum, who’s wonderful and great and we work together well.
The interview came after Affleck and Garner were spotted together at a paintball field to celebrate their youngest son’s birthday. Ben was seen wrapping his arms around his ex-wife and pulling her close, and naturally, there was a colossal buzz around their seemingly intimate relationship.
