What does Pheobe Gates do?
Phoebe is now a student at Stanford University, she has developed a love for fashion and aspires to be a designer. The 21-year-old has already made strides towards achieving this goal by landing an internship in British Vogue and receiving rare invitations to coveted shows and events in New York and Paris fashion weeks. Rubbing shoulders with leaders of the fashion industry certainly provides the proper amount of development for any budding designer.
Furthermore, Phoebe is also a very outspoken women’s rights activist who has leveraged her whopping 402k followers on Instagram and 244.7K on TikTok to talk about the current state of women’s reproductive rights in the US amid today’s political climate and the overturning of Roe v Wade. She used her position in Vogue to write about these issues in depth as well.
Phoebe Gates wants to make a difference
While speaking to WWD Pheobe Gates said:
OK, I’m my parents’ daughter, that gives me immense privilege, but it’s not what I’m defined by. I want to have my own identity, I want to be my own person, I want to branch away from that, but how do I do that in a way where I can yield some sort of change?
For that, she looked at another influential fashion figure who comes from a similar background: Stella McCartney. The fashion icon is Paul McCartney’s daughter which ultimately gave her a lot of the same wealth and privilege that Pheobe has experienced throughout her life. Stella leveraged this background to bring on a big change in the fashion industry by creating one of the leaders of sustainable fashion. Phoebe states:
Her and my mom are actually good friends…Even when I was little she would send me stuff and little notes and I’d be so excited. I’ve been asking my mom forever and ever if I could meet with her
The meeting finally happened in the UK when Phoebe was there for the internship.
I felt very connected to her, I feel like because she’s been able to use the platform she had, because of who her dad is, and then she took that and instead of being like, ‘oh, people define me by this,’ she took it and she was like, ‘OK, I have this immense privilege, now I’m going to use it to leverage something,’ and what she chose to leverage is to launch a brand that is completely sustainable.
Understandably, Phoebe Gates would look at Stella as a role model because she was able to get the McCartney name to mean something entirely different and it is a difficult undertaking to do the same with the Gates name.
