A victim of abuse
But perhaps the bigger reveal to have caused a stir on social media is the fact that the American songstress talks about having been a victim of abuse in her past, timing it accordingly with the release of her single Your Power.
She explains that the song is an 'open letter for people who take advantage—mostly men' containing the lyrics:
You said she thought she was your age/How dare you?
'I used to not understand why age mattered'
In her interview with the British fashion magazine, Eilish shares her thoughts and experience on the pervasiveness of abuse that has plagued young girls all over the world. She explains having not been aware of how subconsciously it is ingrained in our culture to normalize abuse at a young age:
I used to not understand why age mattered. And, of course, you feel like that when you're young, because you're the oldest you've ever been. You feel like you're so mature and you know everything. People forget that you can grow up and realise s*** was f***** up when you were younger.
But that overtime she has realised how important it is to not discount age when the conversation of abuse comes up:
I wanted to say that it doesn't matter who you are, what your life is, your situation, who you surround yourself with, how strong you are, how smart you are.You can always be taken advantage of.
Adding that:
That's a big problem in the world of domestic abuse or statutory rape. girls that were very confident and strong-willed finding themselves in situations where they're like, 'Oh my god, I'm the victim here? And it's so embarrassing and humiliating and demoralising to be in that position of thinking you know so much and then you realise, I'm being abused right now.
