Weathers grew up in New Orleans and later moved to San Diego, California, with his family. He attended San Diego State University, where he excelled in American football. He was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 1970, but left professional American football to pursue an acting career.
His acting career really took off with his iconic role as Apollo Creed in 1976's Rocky. He reprised the role in several sequels, becoming one of the series' most memorable antagonists.
