The two first met in August 1987, per the Daily Mail, and in just four months, they had married and were expecting a baby. Moore and Willis, who retired from acting in 2022, were married for 13 years.
Despite their long marriage, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Nonetheless, after the two divorced, they found a way to remain connected and a family for their three daughters.
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis’ whirlwind marriage
As mentioned above, Demi and Bruce first met in August 1987. In November 1987, just four months after meeting, Moore and Willis jetted off to Las Vegas, where Bruce had proposed while on their way to the gambling tables.
They tied the knot in Vegas, and Demi fell pregnant on their wedding night, as reported by the Daily Mail. Despite being thrilled to welcome their first child, Demi revealed in her memoir in 2019 that her new husband wanted her to stay at home and abandon her acting career.
She wrote:
This is never going to work if you're off shooting a film.
Moore made it work by bringing their daughter, Rumer, with her on set in Canada and would fly home on weekends to fit her husband’s schedule. Eventually, Willis had doubts about their marriage and reportedly told Moore he ‘didn’t know if he wanted to be married’ before heading to Europe for a film.
Moore wrote in her memoir:
Basically he wanted to do whatever the f*ck he wanted.
He was 36, throw in celebrity and money. You do the math.
Despite his statement, Moore and Willis remained married for 13 years, welcoming two more daughters, Scout and Tallulah. They tried to make things work by doing their films at the same time so they could spend their downtime together.
Eventually, in 2000, they divorced, which Demi believes was due to her ‘self-reliance’:
So Bruce and I were trapped in our dance. He felt locked out by my self-reliance which hurt him in ways he couldn't face and fed his ambivalence about our marriage.
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis still close as co-parents
Even though Demi and Bruce’s marriage may not have been the best, the two found a way to remain close — if not closer — after they divorced. This meant that they stayed a family, even if not in the conventional way.
Regardless of what the outside relationship has been, we have maintained being a family in various forms.
Speaking to People, Moore explained that she and Bruce had the same priorities — ‘their children’ — which was the foundation of their relationship.
The foundation of making our children our priority has never wavered.
Moore and Willis still see each other regularly with their children, and Demi often shares photos of all five of them together. Indeed, for Bruce’s birthday, she shared several photos of the celebration as a family.
