'It legitimized them both'

It's perhaps nothing new that Donald and Melania Trump's relationship is being talked about behind closed doors. In particular, the fact that Melania rarely appears in public - and even more rarely by her husband's side - leads to speculation about the famous couple's marriage time and again.

A former confidante of Melania Trump is now adding fuel to the rumour mill. According to the Daily Mail, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff is said to have suggested in a post on X that the couple's relationship is primarily of a business nature. She writes:

Millions of Americans watched the Apprentice. Donald was a household name. He needed a woman who looked & played the part & let him be the star. Marrying Melania & making her a Vogue Cover model —legitimised them both.
What catapulted Donald J. Trump 'businessman' and his 'supermodel' wife to the White House was a mirage created by Survivor producer Mark Burnett and NBC boss Jeff Zucker.

'A symbiotic relationship'

Journalist Cooper Lawrence had already claimed something similar last year, but was less cautious in his comments. According to the Daily Mail, he said of the relationship:

I think [Melania] is sick of being embarrassed by [Donald]... but we have seen women stand by their men many, many times because the attitude it is, 'Listen, you messed up. Why should I be poor?'
I don't know for sure. I've never met her, but they're saying that, you know, it's a symbiotic relationship. He gets the hot model on his arm. She gets to be wealthy and she gets to be an American citizen and then she got to be First Lady.... [and] part of their deal is her standing by him.

The two met at the end of the 1990s during the New York Fashion Week, and they got married in 2005. Mary Jordan has written a biography about Melania and has her own opinion on the couple's relationship. She told the Guardian a few years ago:

I don’t know any couple that spends as much time apart. They are often in the same building, but nowhere near each other. She rarely goes into the West Wing. She doesn’t like to golf. She has her own little spa. She likes to be isolated. She is a loner. He is a loner. They’re perfectly happy to be separated.
And yet, she’s the first call he makes after a speech or a rally, because he trusts her – he doesn’t trust many people – and she watches on TV. So they have a very unusual relationship, but there is a bond there: they have a deal, right from the beginning. He loves himself, he loves his job, he’s got his own life and he spends a lot of time apart from her. And she’s absolutely fine with that.
