Donald Trump allegedly joked Canada should become a US state
As reported by Daily Beast, Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau met at Mar-a-Lago—Trump’s residence—over the weekend (Nov 30—Dec 1). It is believed that they will discuss future trade plans and more once Trump is President.
According to Fox News, Trudeau complained about Trump’s proposition of a 25-percent tariff on Canadian goods. He allegedly claimed it would ‘kill’ the Canadian economy. Donald Trump seemed prepared and his reply was in the form of a joke according to Fox News.
It is said that Trump joked that if Canada couldn’t handle it, they should become a US state and that Trudeau could be a hypothetical Canadian state’s governor.
So far, these claims are unverified and are reportedly from two people who also attended the dinner with Trump and Trudeau. Their names have yet to be revealed.
The Trump/Trudeau meeting was ‘very productive meeting’
Despite the claims of Donald Trump’s joke, both politicians have said the meeting was a success. As per BBC News, following the dinner, Trump described it as a ‘very productive meeting’ and they had discussed ‘many important topics’.
Moreover, Justin Trudeau also shared his thoughts on the meeting and wrote on X that he looked forward to working together again:
Thanks for dinner last night, President Trump. I look forward to the work we can do together, again.
Social media’s response to Donald Trump’s alleged joke
As expected, claims of Donald Trump’s joke that Canada should become a US state have gone viral on social media. Indeed, the video by Fox News explaining the situation has reached 1 million views since it was posted on X at 12:40 AM on December 3, 2024.
The video, shared by @TVNewsNow so far has 677 comments. It seems that most of the comments are supporting Donald Trump, many saying that this type of comment is why they voted for the Republican.
This is probably bullshit - “sources” - but I really hope it isn’t. This is exactly what I voted for.
This is precisely why #WeThePeople love @realDonaldTrump
Other X users criticise Trudeau, some claiming that he is not respected as a leader by many other world leaders:
It’s a valid point. Think about it. We have 3 states that have larger economies than Canada. Justin Trudeau is really not a peer.
We’ll take Canada and turn it into multiple states. It would be better for us and Canadians. Send Trudeau packing!
Trump has no respect for Trudeau, neither do most other world leaders. He’s a joke.
After Trudeau, Trump is set to meet even more world leaders in the coming days.
Donald Trump heading to France for next international visit
As reported by The Guardian, the President-elect is joining 50 heads of state for the reopening of the historic French cathedral, Notre Dame de Paris. Indeed, in 2019, Notre Dame de Paris burned in a fire. After 5 years of reconstruction, the cathedral is finally ready.
This trip will be Donald Trump’s first overseas visit since winning the election. The ceremonies will take place this weekend (Dec 7 - 8). Trump shared his eagerness on Truth Social.
It is an honor to announce that I will be traveling to Paris, France, on Saturday to attend the re-opening of the Magnificent and Historic Notre Dame Cathedral, which has been fully restored after a devastating fire five years ago.
