The two leaders met at the White House this week on Thursday, 27 February. Their discussions focused on continued support for Ukraine, potential peace negotiations, the EU-US relations and the UK-US relationship.
Donald Trump’s ‘very impressed’ with Sir Keir Starmer’s wife
The two leaders answered questions from reporters in the Oval Office, but one of his responses has everyone talking. As Trump answered a question about EU-US relations during his first face-to-face meeting with the Prime Minister, he labelled Sir Keir Starmer’s wife as a ‘beautiful, great woman.’
The response came up when Trump was asked if the UK had to choose between a closer relationship with the EU and US, reports The Standard. Responding to the question by referring to the UK and US relationship, Trump said:
Well, I think we have just a great relationship.
He added:
We actually had a good relationship before. We’ve met a couple of times and I’m very impressed with him, and very impressed with his wife.
I must say, she’s a beautiful, great woman.
Keir Starmer chimed in:
I second that.
Trump—who recently called himself a ‘King’— continued:
And I said, ‘you’re very lucky’. He’s very lucky. And, no, we’ve had a very good relationship.
Donald Trump receives a letter from King Charles
Aside from the media buzz surrounding Trump’s comments, another major highlight of the meeting was a letter delivered to Trump from King Charles. The letter contained an invitation for Trump to have a second state visit in the UK. The invitation has made him the only elected political leader to be invited to a second state visit by the British monarchy, reports Sky News.
Traditionally second-term US presidents are not offered a state visit and have instead been invited for tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle.
While royal correspondence is generally not made public, Trump held up the letter to show that he had accepted it. From the pictures that went viral of the letter, it could be interpreted what had been written in.
King Charles started the letter with referring to the ‘breadth of challenges across the world’, adding that the UK and US have a ‘vital role to play’ in it.
The monarch wrote how he fondly remembers his previous state visit and suggested a visit to Balmoral or Dumfries House in Scotland at some stage.
He goes on to write:
There is much on both Estates which I think you might find interesting and enjoy - particularly as my Foundation at Dumfries House provides hospitality skills-training for young people who often end up as staff in your own establishments!
Quite apart from this presenting an opportunity to discuss a wide range of issues of mutual interest, it would also offer a valuable chance to plan a historic second State Visit to the United Kingdom.
As you will know, this is unprecedented by a US president. That is why I would find it helpful for us to be able to discuss, together, a range of options for location and programme content.
In so doing, working together, I know we will further enhance the special relationship between our two countries, of which we are both so proud.
Trump read the letter and said:
That's a great, great honour. And that says at Windsor - that's really something.
