The charges allege that Pettit sold counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs containing fentanyl to McCormick two days prior to his death. Upon his death the corner revealed that in addition to the drugs in his system they found fentanyl.
Fentanyl is a highly dangerous drug that is 50 time more potent that heroin. In recent years it has been used to lace other drugs such as cocaine to cut costs for the dealer. This can makes substances a lot more dangerous than they already are.
U.S. Attorney Nick Hanna made this statement in a press release: "Drugs laced with cheap and potent fentanyl are increasingly common, and we owe it to the victims and their families to aggressively target the drug dealers that cause these overdose deaths."
A document held by investigators show instagram messages sent by Pettit to another user the night of Mac Millers death where he allegedly wrote: "I am not great ... Most likely I will die in jail." Pettit continues with: "I'm gonna get off the grid. Move to another country."
The Investigators were also able to secure text messages between Miller and Pettit where they discussed the narcotic sales.
Pettit made an appearance in federal court yesterday in Los Angeles but was not asked to enter a plea. He has been detained without bail pending trial and received an arraignment date of October 11th where he will enter his plea and the court will decide if he will be released to await his trial.
If convicted of the charges he is facing Cameron James Pettit could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
