CELEBS WHO DIED TOO SOON

Elvis Presley may have left the building decades ago, but his legacy lives on through his grandchildren. The King of Rock and Roll had just one daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. She lived a life in the spotlight, not only as a singer but also through her high-profile romances with stars like Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage.

Lisa Marie died in 2023 at the age of 54, leaving behind four children: Riley, Benjamin, Finley and Harper. Each of them carries a piece of the Presley story.

While some, like Riley, have embraced the spotlight, others, like Finley and Harper, have largely stayed out of public view—until recently. And sadly, one member of this next generation left too soon.

Riley Keough

Riley is the daughter of musician Danny Keough, whom Lisa Marie married in 1988. Their marriage lasted six years before they separated in 1994.

Born on 29 May 1989, Danielle Riley Keough is the eldest of Lisa Marie Presley's children and Elvis Presley's first grandchild. Known simply as Riley, she has made a name for herself as an actress and filmmaker, starring in Daisy Jones & The Six and co-directing War Pony, which premiered at Cannes.

According to People, Riley has always spoken warmly of her famous lineage but has credited her mother and grandmother with letting her grow up as her own person.

After Lisa Marie’s death in January 2023, Riley found herself at the centre of a legal dispute over her mother's estate. A 2016 amendment named her, her siblings Finley and Harper, and her late brother Benjamin as heirs.

Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie's mother, contested the amendment, questioning its authenticity. But by May 2023, the family reached a private settlement. According to NBC Washington, Riley was appointed the sole heir of the estate, officially taking over ownership of Graceland.

Just months later, she honoured a promise to her mother by completing Lisa Marie’s unfinished memoir. Released on 8 October 2024, From Here to the Great Unknown is a deeply personal book filled with recorded memories Lisa Marie left behind.

Riley told People:

[My mom] wanted to write a book in the hopes that someone could read her story and relate to her, to know that they’re not alone in the world. Her hope with this book was just human connection. So that’s mine.

She added that writing about her mother’s death and her brother Benjamin’s suicide was ‘incredibly difficult.’

Now a mother herself, Riley has a daughter named Tupelo Storm, a touching tribute to both her grandfather’s birthplace and her brother’s middle name. While reflecting on her own upbringing, she shared on the Call Her Daddy podcast that Lisa Marie was an 'amazing parent' who often tried to recreate the grandeur her own father had provided. But Riley admitted she wants a different path for her daughter:

I really want my children to be able to find joy playing in the backyard and doing normal kids stuff and not need elephants and circus and all these things all the time.

Benjamin Keough

Lisa’s second child with Danny Keough, Benjamin Storm Presley Keough was born on 21 October 1992 and was often noted for his striking resemblance to Elvis. But Benjamin stayed out of the limelight, keeping a low profile as he tried to carve out his own identity. Sadly, he passed away in July 2020 at age 27, dying by suicide.

A spokesperson for Lisa told People:

She is completely heartbroken, inconsolable and beyond devastated but trying to stay strong for her 11-year-old twins and her oldest daughter Riley, She adored that boy. He was the love of her life.

Her grief was visible in everything she shared in the years that followed. On what would have been Benjamin’s 28th birthday, she wrote:

My heart and soul went with you. The depth of the pain is suffocating and bottomless without you every moment of every day.

Benjamin was buried at Graceland—the first person to be laid to rest there since his great-grandmother in 1980. He joined his grandfather Elvis, great-grandparents Vernon and Gladys Presley, and great-great-grandmother Minnie Mae Presley in the Meditation Garden.

According to Riley, the emotional toll of her brother’s death was too much for her mother. In an interview with People, she said:

My mom tried her best to find strength for me and my younger sisters after Ben died, but we knew how much pain she was in.
My mom physically died from the aftereffects of her surgery, but we all knew she died of a broken heart.

Twins Finley and Harper Lockwood

Born on 7 October 2008, twins Finley Aaron Love and Harper Vivienne Anne Lockwood are the youngest of Elvis’s descendants. The daughters of Lisa Marie and musician Michael Lockwood have mostly been kept away from the public eye. But that changed recently when Finley made a rare appearance in Calabasas. As reported by the Daily Mail, the 16-year-old looked remarkably like her grandfather.

The paper noted her resemblance was 'striking,' especially as she stepped out with her father on a casual shopping trip. She was dressed in a white cable knit sweater layered over a pink tank top and paired with flared jeans.

Despite their private lives, both Finley and Harper took to social media to pay tribute to Lisa Marie on the second anniversary of her passing. Finley shared a touching photo of Lisa Marie holding her and her sister as newborns, writing:

2 years. I love you always.

Harper wrote:

I can’t believe it’s been 2 years. I miss you and love you so much, Mama.

The twins’ early years weren’t without drama. Following Lisa Marie’s divorce from Michael Lockwood in 2016, a difficult custody battle ensued. During this time, Priscilla Presley stepped in, welcoming the girls into her home.

Finley and Harper were also named in the 2016 amendment to Lisa Marie’s trust, but following the estate dispute, Riley was confirmed as the sole trustee of their sub-trusts. Michael Lockwood was appointed as their guardian ad litem, meaning he was chosen by the court to advocate for their best interests during the legal proceedings.
