Spanning three seasons, the show wrapped up in 2010, leaving fans wanting more. A decade later, it returned in 2019 with a Christmas episode that ended on an unforgettable cliffhanger: Nessa proposing to Smithy.

In 2024, the creators, James Corden, who has been called out for his bad behaviour in the past, and Ruth Jones decided to grace our TV screens for one last Christmas episode.

James Corden confirms it’s the end of BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey

The Christmas episode wasn’t just a festive special, but it was the definitive end of the beloved series. Unlike many cancelled shows, Gavin & Stacey wasn’t axed by the network, confirms The Sun. Instead, it was always up to the creators to continue the story or end it.

The duo felt they had given everything to the story and were determined to ensure the finale served the characters and audience alike. Corden and Jones appeared on Hits Radio Breakfastshow Christmas special and confirmed the show can’t carry on anymore, reports The Herald.

Speaking to the hosts, Corden said:

It can’t carry on, it genuinely can’t. And you’ll realise that there’s certain moments that happen in the episode, which make it very, very clear that the show cannot carry on.
We as writers wouldn’t know how to carry on that story. We feel very, very proud of it. We’ve really given it everything we could have given it.

Explaining how they had 'a lot of pressure’ to end it the right way, Corden hoped that people feel ‘this is the right way to say goodbye’ to their beloved characters.

Fans, however, had mixed emotions after watching the last episode. While many praised the finale as ‘absolutely perfect,’ others are heartbroken to see their favourite characters bid farewell. One took X and wrote:

End of an era. Fel emotional.
What a perfect way to end an epic show! The nods and references to previous episodes, the fishing trip still remaining a mystery and the ending we all wanted…genius!
Absolutely brilliant! Gutted it’s over, but it had to end one day. It’s been a blast, thanks James Corden and Ruth Jones.

It’s not the end for Gavin & Stacey…

Although the show is over, Gavin & Stacey will live on in a surprising way, reports The Mirror.

James Corden and Ruth Jones recently announced a new project: When Gavin Met Stacey and Everything in Between: A Story of Love and Friendship. The book promises to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the series, detailing how the creators turned their ‘little show’ into a cultural phenomenon.

The book will explore everything from the challenges of writing the series to never-before-heard stories about the cast and crew. Penguin, the publisher, describes it as a ‘one-of-a-kind book’ that offers new revelations while celebrating the deep friendship between Corden and Jones.
