As the longest-standing members of the Gogglebox family, Giles Wood and Mary Killen are firm fan favourites on the hit Channel 4 show - Gogglebox. Despite being one of the nation's favourite couples thanks to their one-liners and funny put-downs, Giles insists they live a quiet life and still get shocked when they are recognised in public.
From their dry sense of humour and quick wit to wallpaper that matches their furniture, this married couple's TV reviews are what most viewers live for. However, their life behind the cameras isn’t as happy and smooth as it looks to the viewers—and they're not the only ones who give off that impression as this famous Gogglebox couple recently called it quits.
Giles Wood reveals Mary Killens ‘hardly talks’ to him
Giles and Mary have been together for over three decades and have provided great entertainment on Gogglebox—whose star George Gilbey recently died after a traumatic injury—with their unfiltered reactions. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Giles revealed he was left craving human interactions.
The couple lives in a farmhouse in Wiltshire. During an interview this year, Giles explained that it is difficult to find people to talk to. After being prompted that he could always talk to his companion - Mary, he revealed their marriage isn’t as perfect as people would think, reports Hello! Magazine. Giles shared:
Mary hardly talks to me at all because we’re incompatible. The only time we talk is to say, 'Shall we watch Netflix or Apple TV tonight?' We’re basically distracting our lives away.
This isn’t the first time the couple has spoken about their marriage troubles. Mary previously gave a cheeky response when asked about her living situation with Giles. She said:
The thing about Giles is he’s 48 per cent bad but 52 per cent good. It gets worse every year.
Very little is known about their relationship but they have been together since they were 21 years old. They have two daughters who like to stay out of the limelight.
Why are Giles Wood and Mary Killen still together?
It’s no surprise that their marriage isn’t the ideal setup. However, the couple is still together after 30 years, while many other celebs have had marriages shorter than a sneeze. The eccentric pair revealed that despite their differences, their love for ‘same jokes,’ is keeping them together, confirms Daily Star.
Mary claimed that the two are very different people and said:
Giles and I were like ships that pass in the night.
Mary labelled both of them as ‘neurotic’ and stated that Giles has ‘multiple personality disorder’ that makes life challenging. However, she added that every man is annoying in some way or the other. Mary explained:
You have to understand all men are really annoying one way or another. Would you prefer one of your friends' husbands?
I've thought about each one in turn and concluded their habits are even more irritating than Giles's.
How did Gogglebox’s Giles Wood and Mary Killen meet?
Over the years, Giles Wood and Mary Killen have won over Gogglebox viewers with their zany remarks and unique dynamic. The couple appears on our TV sets, settled into their respective armchairs as they watch the week’s top TV moments.
However, what else do we know about them or their relationship? According to Metro.co.uk,they met at Wimbledon College of Art where Giles was a student and Mary was a costume model who got '£4.50 an hour' to pose. They have never revealed much about the details of their relationship, but have always remarked that the ‘rest was history.’ It is not known exactly when they eventually tied the knot.
The couple has not revealed their exact ages when they met but their relationship dates back decades - they have been together for more than 30 years. Giles recently shared a series of throwback photos of the couple on Instagram where he confirmed that the portraits were taken in 1986 - around 38 years ago.
His earliest post on Instagram was shared in June 2021 and featured a photo of the couple taken around 1990. They were seen enjoying each other’s company outdoors.
How did Gogglebox save their marriage?
The couple’s two daughters have moved out of their family home and it’s just the two of them living together now. When Mary first appeared on our TV screens in 2015 on Gogglebox, she was not the original choice for the show.
The Express reports that the broadcasting channel wanted Giles to appear on the show with one of his daughters. However, the daughter stepped out of the gig last minute to maintain a low-key profile and that’s how Mary got the part. The pair were an instant hit and since then, the married duo have become well-loved members of the Gogglebox cast. Highlighting how Gogglebox saved their life, Mary explained:
I got up early. He went to bed late. And we rarely even ate together.
I know a few couples who have split up because they have decided they can’t stand one another.
Sitting down and watching television reminded us how much we enjoyed the same jokes.
Why do Giles Wood and Mary Killen call each other 'Nutty?'
They often address each other as ‘Nutty,’ which Mary previously revealed is in reference to The Nutty Professor cartoon strip. She said:
We call each other 'nutty' because we both consider the other to be a bit mad.
Certainly, Giles has multiple personality disorder so he's all sorts of people and one of them is a bit of a genius.
