The 40th Brit Awards ceremony took place last night, Tuesday 18th February, at London’s O2 Arena. Presented for the third year running by comedian and actor Jack Whitehall, the show was broadcast live on ITV from 8 til 10 pm. But viewers were left confused when Lewis Capaldi’s speech got muted in their coverage.

Lewis won two of the night’s big awards – Song of the Year, for Someone You Loved, and New Artist of the Year, beating out Dave, Mabel, Aitch and Sam Fender. However, when Lewis got up on stage to accept the last award, ITV viewers were met with silence whilst the singer made a 30-second speech.
It turns out that Lewis got muted because of his pottymouth. The 23-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter celebrated picking up the award from Clara Amfo and Niall Horan by downing his pint onstage then saying into the mic ‘Thank you very f***ing much. See you in a bit. Good night.’
In his other acceptance speech, which wasn’t muted, Lewis took the opportunity to clear up speculation that his winning song, Someone You Loved, was about his ex-girlfriend Paige Turley, who is currently tipped to win this series of Love Island with her new boyfriend Finnley Tapp.
Picking up the Song of the Year award, Lewis, who had already spoken out about the rumours, reiterated:
‘A lot of people think this song is about my ex-girlfriend who you can now see every night on Love Island. But it's actually about my grandmother who has sadly passed away a few years ago, so I hope to god ITV don't contact her to be on a reality dating TV show.’
