Born in Akron, Ohio, James is widely considered one of the greatest basketball players of all time. At 40 years old, he has been playing in the NBA for an astonishing 22 seasons. He began his professional career in 2003 when he was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers. After successful stints with the Miami Heat and a return to Cleveland, he joined the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018. Now in his seventh season with the Lakers, James boasts an extraordinary career that includes four NBA championships and four league MVP titles.
But how much longer can fans expect to see him on the court?
How much has LeBron James earned in his career?
According to Pro Football and Sports Network, LeBron James has earned a staggering $528.7 million from his NBA playing career alone. His latest contract with the Los Angeles Lakers is worth $101.4 million over two years. During the 2024-25 NBA season, James is earning around $48.7 million, making him the 14th-highest-paid player in the league. Next season, he is set to earn $52.6 million.
But James' wealth extends far beyond his NBA salary. James became the first active NBA player to reach billionaire status, with Forbes estimating his net worth at $1.2 billion.
While his basketball earnings are substantial, much of his fortune comes from endorsements. For instance, he is expected to bring in an estimated $80 million in endorsements alone this year. James is also a savvy entrepreneur, investing in Fenway Sports Group and having a growing Hollywood career. His film appearances include starring in Space Jam: A New Legacy, and he holds numerous producer and writer credits.
When will LeBron James retire?
Despite being 40, LeBron James shows no signs of slowing down. As reported by Forbes, James remains highly effective on the court. His dedication to maintaining peak physical condition is legendary, with millions reportedly spent on his recovery and fitness routines.
When asked about retirement on the Pat McAfee Show, James said:
It’s popping up more and more every year.
Obviously, I know that I’m on the other side of the hill than the other side. For me, it’s about my mind. I’m all about the process.
If it gets to the point where I don't feel like showing up to the arena five hours in advance. Or I don't feel like training. Or I don't feel like studying the scout sheet of guys. If it gets to that point, I'll know, 'You know what, Bron, that's a wrap.' I will be able to tell.
A popular fan theory suggests that James might delay retirement until his second son, Bryce, enters the NBA. Bryce is currently 17 and will be eligible for the draft in 2026. According to Forbes, this theory is not confirmed but is seen as a reasonable possibility, given James' dedication to family.
Inside LeBron James' family life
LeBron James' family is at the heart of everything he does.
He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Savannah James, since 2013, and has often credited her for his success, telling Harper's Bazaar:
A person like myself always needs a great sidekick and a person you can rely on no matter the circumstances. And she's that. She's got my back and I love her for that.
The couple have three children: Bronny, 20, Bryce, 17, and Zhuri, 10.
As reported by People, Bronny James followed in his father's footsteps and was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in June 2024. This achievement made history, with LeBron and Bronny becoming the first father-son duo to play in the NBA simultaneously and on the same team. Reflecting on this moment, LeBron told ESPN it meant everything. He added:
For someone who didn't have that growing up, to be able to have that influence on your kids and have influence on your son, be able to have moments with your son, and ultimately to be able to work with your son, I think that's one of the greatest things that a father can ever hope for or wish for.
Bryce is also a promising basketball player. In January 2025, he committed to playing basketball for the University of Arizona. James celebrated on Instagram:
CONGRATULATIONS MAXIMUS!! SO PROUD OF YOU!!!
Zhuri Nova James, the youngest of the family, already has a flair for fashion and public appearances. In 2020, she helped launch a children's clothing collection and is often seen supporting her father courtside. Speaking about his children, LeBron told Access Hollywood:
My daughter is the greatest thing in my life, along with my boys. So, whenever she smiles, it don't matter what I'm doing, it makes me happy.
