In 2019, Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott announced to the world that they were divorcing after being married for 25 years. In a joint statement on X – then Twitter – the former couple explained that despite their separation they were still ‘family’ and they ‘remain cherished friends’.

Jeff and MacKenzie first met in 1993. Their relationship moved quickly; within three months of their first date, they were engaged, and six months later, they were married. In 1994, the two left New York for Seattle, where Jeff founded Amazon.
The former couple share four children together: three sons and a daughter. As with any divorce, the couple agreed on a settlement; however, as Bezos, who has found love again, has a net worth of $193 billion, the sum MacKenzie received was just as impressive.
MacKenzie Scott received $36 billion in the divorce
According to People, following her divorce from the Amazon founder, MacKenzie Scott received a massive $36 billion settlement. MacKenzie put her new fortune to good use.
A three-year study published by the Center for Effective Philanthropy in February 2025 has revealed that Scott ‘transformed’ the world of philanthropy through her sizable donations. Per People, the author has donated over $19 billion to more than 2,000 charities.
The study explains that at the moment, it is hard to see the impact her donations have had and will have long-term, but so far, the overall impact is ‘overwhelmingly positive’.
It could take decades to truly understand the effects these gifts have had on nonprofits and the sector at large. However, after five years of giving, the reported effects of her gifts on recipient organizations… remain overwhelmingly positive.
When Bezos and Scott split, MacKenzie kept roughly 4% of their Amazon shares, with Bezos keeping 75%, which comes to roughly 12% of the company, per The New York Times.
Speaking about their divorce in 2019, MacKenzie revealed that after ‘dissolving’ the marriage, she was looking forward to being ‘co-parents’ with her ex-husband.
MacKenzie Scott remarried after her divorce
Two years after divorcing Jeff Bezos, MacKenzie married a second time. She found love with Dan Jewett, a former Seattle-based science teacher. Per The Standard, Dan was Bezos and Scott’s children’s teacher.
MacKenzie’s relationship with Dan was kept private. Scott announced her marriage to Jewett on her philanthropy site, Giving Pledge. In the statement, Dan shared his gratitude ‘for the exceptional privilege it will be to partner in giving away assets with the potential to do so much good when shared’.
Shortly after getting married, Dan quit his job as a science teacher at Lakeside School in Seattle to join his new wife in her commitment to donate most of her wealth.
However, the new marriage did not last; just two years after tying the knot, the two divorced. Like with her marriages, MacKenzie has also kept details about both her divorces private. Indeed, not much is known about why she and Bezos divorced in 2019; the same goes for her second divorce.
