The two artists shared an intense relationship that spanned over two years. In a recent conversation with BBC radio, with Sean (Lennon’s son), Elton opened up about his relationship with Lennon and how it affected him. Here’s what happened.
The ‘whirlwind’ romance
As per The Express, Elton John described his relationship with Lennon as a 'wonderful two or three-year whirlwind romance'. It apparently helped him in many aspects of his life, both personally and professionally. Elton admitted to having gained more confidence and strength from the relationship with Lennon.
He also admitted having done ‘a lot of naughty, naughty things’ with Lennon, which was absolutely fun:
We nearly got into trouble a few times, but we never had a bad word... people say ‘Oh watch out for him, he can turn’, and I think maybe when he was drinking a lot and everything he did, but I never saw that.
Their special relationship
The first time the two global music sensations met was in 1973, and they instantly hit it off. Lennon was Elton’s idol, and he was awe-struck at meeting the Hey Jude singer. And this admiration went both ways. Sean said:
My dad, when he first heard your voice he was in America, I think, already, and he was thinking that's the first new kind of British singing that he really liked and dug. I think he said that he loved your music and the songs, and he liked the song, Your Song.
The two years that followed
The years that followed after they met were magical for the artists. Being one of the OG’s to have a bromance, the artists shared a lot of creative exchanges, laughter, and admiration for one another. They even collaborated from time to time. Elton fondly recalled his time with Lennon and said:
Your dad was as kind and as generous and sweet and we just hit it off immediately. He was so funny. That's what I loved about him. And we talked about music, we talked about records we loved.
