Harris - who has an impressive portfolio worth $8 million - married her husband Douglas Emhoff in 2014. Before his relationship with Harris, Douglas was married to his ex-wife Kerstin for 16 years before it ended.
Doug Emhoff's extra marital affair
According to a recent report by Daily Mail, while Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff was married to Kerstin, he had an affair with their nanny who also taught at their children’s private school. The woman did not deny the claims when contacted by Daily Mail and now lives in The Hamptons, New York.
Emhoff and his ex-wife Kerstin ended their 16-year-long marriage after she discovered his cheating. After the affair, the nanny reportedly had to leave her teaching job at The Willows - the elite private elementary school where Emhoff’s kids went. A mother who sent her kids to the same school also shared that she knew about the affair and was 'disgusted' by Emhoff but spoke highly of the nanny - who would also take care of her kids.
The nanny allegedly had a financial settlement with Emhoff.
As per Daily Mail the scandal is understood to have shaken up Harris’ campaign - who has taken a lead over Donald Trump in several polls as the two try to figure out their upcoming debate details.
What do Kamala Harris, Doug Emhoff and his first wife Kerstin have to say about the scandal?
Doug Emhoff has acknowledged that he had an affair that ended his first marriage in a statement given to CNN. He told the publication:
During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some tough times on account of my actions. I took responsibility, and in the years since, we worked through things as a family and have come out stronger on the other side.
His first wife Kerstin also took the opportunity to support Emhoff and said:
Doug and I decided to end our marriage for a variety of reasons, many years ago. He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala, and I have built together.
Meanwhile, Harris’ representative has denied any comments on the scandal after. Additionally, it has been reported that Joe Biden knew about Emhoff’s past when he made Harris his running mate in 2020.
Harris is also understood to have prior knowledge of the affair when she married Emhoff. Kerstin also speaks very warmly of Harris and the co-parenting setup the three of them have created for Emhoff and Kerstin’s kids.
