What are Reborn dolls?
The Sun reports that Reborn dolls can sell for £300, with some selling for as much as £20,000. In recent years, Reborn dolls’s popularity has increased and many across the UK have ‘adopted’ these dolls, some using them as a replacement for a real baby, while others collect them, as per Daily Mail.
Reborn dolls are made to be lifelike and can be personalised, they are hand-painted with extreme detail. Each Reborn doll is unique and can have freckles, rosy cheeks, specific facial expressions, skin textures and even birthmarks.
Owners of Reborn dolls can also request extra features, including battery-operated 'breathing machines', human hair or a scent that blends baby powder and infant laundry detergent.
These dolls can be so life-like that they can sometimes be mistaken for real babies. Indeed, one woman, Ava Prior found that out the hard way. As reported by Daily Mail, Ava paints Reborn dolls as a hobby and one day, the police smashed her door down as they mistook one of the dolls as being ‘abandoned’, they caused over £400 worth of damage.
