3 year anniversary

At the age of 26, Thalassitis, who came to prominence on Love Island in 2017, took his own life. He was found hung by a jogger in a park in Edmonton, North London. Toxicology results had detected a mix of drugs and alcohol in his body and former Love Island contestant, Montana Brown, had confirmed that the footballer had been in a 'dark place' in the months before his death.

Marcel Somervile, fellow Islander on the series Thalassitis was on, took so Instagram to pay tribute to his deceased close friend. In the post, he wrote:

Always Remembered My Brother! It’s not a coincidence me and @jonny_mitchell1991 always catch up around this time. If you was still with us no doubt you’d be having a drink with us!

Montana Brown also took a moment to commemorate Thalassitis. On an Instagram story, she posted:

3 years today, can’t believe it. What a gentle and sweet man left us far too soon. I know he is watching over and at peace now which gives me great comfort. But days like today I will be thinking of all the amazing memories we shared.

More support

Mike Thalassitis is the fourth person linked to Love Island who has committed suicide resulting in backlash for the show. In 2018, Sophie Gradon took her own life and in 2020, presenter Caroline Flack was found hung in her home.

As a result, since 2021, ITV bosses have made mental health resources more available. On top of the extensive psychological support they receive post show, islanders have also now been given financial management and social media training to help them deal with the pressures that come with being catapulted into the spotlight.
