Tragedy has struck Mariah Carey's life. The singer is in mourning following the death of two women in her life. The singer told People Magazine in an exclusive statement that her mother and sister died on the same day. She said:

My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.
I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed.

She added that she 'appreciates everyone's love and support' and also their respect for her privacy during this 'impossible time'.

Mariah Carey's complicated relationship with her mother

Carey has often spoken about her relationship with her mother and siblings, but unfortunately, they were filled with trials and tribulations—an experience she has in common with far too many celebrities.

Mariah, her brother Morgan, and her sister Alison, were children of a marriage between their father Alfred, who was Afro-Venezuelan, and their mother Patricia, who was caucasian. The singer previously revealed that the fact that marriage was interracial caused many problems for the family. As per People, she said in 1999 on The Oprah Winfrey Show that they were victims of racial discrimination and violent attacks. It was also a source of conflict between Mariah Carey and her mother itself.

Her parents divorced when she was only three years old, and she then lived with her mother. While she has said that her mother did the 'best she could', she has shared that they've had a 'complicated journey together'. She wrote in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey:

I’ve emancipated myself from bondage several times, but there is a cloud of sadness that I suspect will always hang over me, not simply because of my mother but because of our complicated journey together

Her sister Alison had lodged a complaint against her

Her mother is not the only family member she's had complicated relationships with. She confessed that she renamed both her brother and sister as 'ex-brother' and 'ex-sister' for her 'sanity'. She said:

I had to stop expecting them to one day miraculously become the mommy, big brother and big sister I fantasized about.

She made heavy claims about her sister in her memoir, which led to Alison filing a complaint against her and demanding over $1 million. Carey declared in the book:

When I was 12 years old, my sister drugged me with Valium, offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine, inflicted me with third-degree burns and tried to sell me out to a pimp.

Alison denied all the claims and has also made serious allegations of her own. In 2020, she said the singer and their mother Patricia allowed 'strangers' to sexually abuse her when she was a child.
