Rupert Murdoch's son to take over his media empire: Who is Lachlan Murdoch?

At the age of 92, Ruport Murchoch has finally decided to step down as the main face of Fox and News Corp. It was announced that his eldest son, Lachlan Murdoch, 52, will take over as the new chairman of the media empire.

Despite no longer being the chairman, Rupert Murdoch will still serve on the boards as a chairman emeritus, as reported by CNN. Lachlan Murdoch said in a statement on, Tuesday, September 21:

We thank him for his vision, his pioneering spirit, his steadfast determination, and the enduring legacy he leaves to the companies he founded and countless people he has impacted.

The lead-up to Lachlan Murdoch’s takeover

The planning for the takeover of Fox and News Corp started in 2015, as per CNN. Indeed, Rupert had named his sons, Lachlan and James Murdoch as co-chairmen of 21st Century Fox. Then, in 2019, James Murdoch decided to leave the company and Lachlan became CEO of Fox, shortly after Disney bought the company.

Now that Lachlan is the sole chairman of the media empire, it is unclear whether it’ll continue pro-Trump rhetoric. However, Lachlan has previously criticised Donald Trump and has said that he disagrees with the way that Trump behaves.

Who is Lachlan Murdorch?

Lachlan Murdoch is Rupert Murdoch’s eldest son from his second marriage to Anna Torv. Lachlan was born in London, but from age 3, he was raised in the US and then spent much of his adult life in Australia.

Lachlan started his career in journalism at the Daily Mirror and eventually worked his way up to executive at News Corp, as per The Evening Standard. In a surprising move in 2005, Lachlan decided to leave his father’s business and work in investments. Then, in 2014, he returned as co-chairman of News Corp.

Lachlan has been married to Sarah O’Hare since 1999 and together, the couple have 3 children, Kalan Alexander, born on 9 November 2004, and Aidan Patrick, born on 6 May 2006 and one daughter, Aerin Elisabeth, born on 12 April 2010.
