Roy Keane is a footballing icon—an absolute powerhouse on the pitch and a razor-sharp pundit off it. He’s the guy you wouldn’t want to meet in a midfield battle, but you’d love to have on your team. As a former Manchester United captain, he remains one of the most memorable figures in Premier League history.

He has won numerous titles during his career, cementing his legacy as one of the game’s toughest midfielders. And when he left the game? He took that same no-nonsense attitude to TV, where his blunt, brutally honest takes continue to entertain and terrify in equal measure.
But while Keane is as outspoken as they come, there’s one area of his life that remains shrouded in mystery—his marriage. Enter Theresa Doyle, the woman who has been by his side for over three decades. Unlike her husband, Theresa prefers to fly under the radar, avoiding the spotlight despite being married to one of football’s most talked-about figures. Who is she? Let’s find out!
Who is Roy Keane’s wife, Theresa Doyle?
Keane may be very open about his views on and off the field, but he remains very private about his personal life and his wife Theresa Doyle.
Theresa Doyle, 52, was born in England but grew up in Mayfield, Cork, Ireland, as per a report by Sports Brief. Unlike her famous husband, she prefers to stay out of the limelight. Her parents, Maurice and Marie Doyle, owned a bar in their hometown, and she grew up with her siblings, Anne and Maurice Jr. She pursued her education in Cork before working as a dental assistant.
Despite being married to one of football’s most outspoken figures, Theresa has managed to remain an enigma. She is absent from social media and rarely makes public appearances, something that Keane respects. According to The Sun, Keane once admitted:
I don’t really mention her in public, but in fairness to her, she has been a rock in my life. Just brilliant. She reads me better than I read myself.
How did Roy Keane and Theresa Doyle meet?
Roy Keane and Theresa Doyle first met in 1992 when Keane was playing for Nottingham Forest. However, their initial meeting wasn’t exactly a love-at-first-sight scenario. According to The Sun, Theresa was in a steady relationship at the time and wasn’t particularly impressed by Roy Keane, the rising footballer.
In fact, she reportedly blanked him when he first approached her. He once revealed:
She blanked me…
It wasn’t until her previous relationship ended that she agreed to go out with Keane. He once revealed:
Eventually, after her relationship broke up, she relented and we went out together. I was in love.
But that didn’t mean everything was smooth for the football legend. Reportedly, their first date did not go as planned. Speaking on The Tommy Tiernan Show, Keane admitted their initial meeting was nothing short of a disaster.
Keane shared that after picking her up, he suggested going to the cinema, thinking it would be an easy way to spend time together without much conversation. But Theresa wasn’t interested in a movie.
Keane then proposed going for a drink, but she turned that down too. He said:
I said "do you want to go for a drink" and she said no… I literally went back to the car, this was all within 10, 15 minutes and she said, "What are you doing?"
I said, "Well you don't want to go for a drink, you don't want to go to the pictures, what else can we do?"
And she got out [of the car], I said, "I might see you next week?" She said, "I don't think so" and slammed the door.
Despite the disastrous start, Keane somehow managed to win her over. The couple began dating and tied the knot in a private ceremony in 1997 at Our Lady Crowned Church in Mayfield, Cork. He added:
That was our first date and we're still married!
A family-focused life: Children and grandchildren
Although Keane rarely discusses his family life in public, it is well known that he and Theresa have five children together: Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah, and Alanna.
The family moved several times over the years due to Keane’s footballing career. They lived in Bowdon before settling down in Hale, Greater Manchester. Later, they relocated to Suffolk when Keane took up a managerial role at Ipswich Town.
Keane has admitted that retirement from football didn’t go exactly as he had planned. In his autobiography, he wrote:
My plan when I first stopped was, we’re going to go on some family trips, we’re going to be like the Waltons.
We’re all going to spend time together, go walk in the park and after a month or two they didn’t have the same plan as me so I think they were kind of missing me going to work.
Their children have grown up to have careers of their own. Their daughter Caragh, for instance, battled lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease. Determined to take control of her health, she researched the link between gut health and inflammation, leading her to create a cereal that promotes overall well-being. Keane has been spotted prompting it proudly on many occasions.
Meanwhile, Leah is engaged to Premier League footballer Taylor Harwood-Bellis. The youngest daughter, has pursued a career as a skin specialist and laser therapist at the Little Cheshire Clinic in Altrincham, Greater Manchester. Shannon, the eldest, and Aidan, Keane’s only son, prefer to keep a low profile, staying out of the public eye.
Beyond his children, Keane is also a grandfather. He frequently shares snippets of his life with his grandkids on Instagram, even joking about dressing up as a Paw Patrol character for them.
