An inspirational role
Chyler Leigh found the inspiration to question her life thanks to her character on Supergirl, Alex Danvers, a role which she has had since 2015. She revealed to the American website Creating Change that her own coming-out happened through her character's coming-out.
‘When I was told that my character [Alex Danvers] was to come out in season 2, a flurry of thoughts and emotions flew through and around me (…) My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest each take we filmed, every time presenting another opportunity to get those honest words out of my mouth. Though they don't exactly match my personal dialogue, the heart behind it surely did’
Building a new life
It was at the age of 38 that Chyler Leigh found her way to her truth. Unfortunately, hercoming-out was not accepted by all of her loved ones. Married to actor Nathan West since 2002, father of their three children, the actress acknowledges that ‘it has been a long and lonely road for (her) and (her) husband’ but remains optimistic about their ability to accept each other.
Chyler Leigh, like Sara Ramirez (Callie Torres) and Jake Borelli (Levi Schmidtt) before her, is breaking the taboos surrounding the subject of one’s sexuality.
