England’s national football team has been without a permanent manager since July 2024, following the resignation of Gareth Southgate after the Euro 2024 final. The team has since been led by interim manager Lee Carsley, who has navigated through crucial matches in the UEFA Nations League. However, a permanent solution was needed.

Gary Lineker previously suggested that Frank Lampard could be a good replacement for Gareth Southgate. However, the Football Association (FA) has chosen a different path and appointed Thomas Tuchel as England's new coach. On 8 October, they signed Tuchel as the permanent England manager, with his tenure set to begin on 1 January 2025. After months without a permanent head coach, the England team is expected to improve on the pitch under Tuchel’s supervision.

Thomas Tuchel takes a pay cut for the England role

Tuchel’s appointment has generated excitement, particularly due to his impressive managerial record at Chelsea and Bayern Munich. However, it's not just his arrival that has caught attention, it’s the significant financial sacrifice he’s making for the role.

According to The Standard, Tuchel has accepted the England manager position at a substantial pay cut. During his time at Chelsea, the 51-year-old earned over £10 million annually. He achieved significant success with the club, guiding them to victory in the UEFA Champions League, the Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

After leaving Chelsea, he took over at Bayern Munich with a reduced salary of £7.5 million per year and stayed with them for 14 months.

His salary as England's head coach

Now, in his new role as England’s head coach, Tuchel will be earning £5 million annually—half of what he earned at Chelsea and significantly less than his salary at Bayern.

This major salary reduction reflects the general disparity between national team managerial roles and top-tier club positions. Tuchel has signed a contract with the FA that runs until after the 2026 World Cup.

Who is Thomas Tuchel? Everything we know about England's head coach

Thomas Tuchel is one of the most respected tacticians in world football. Born in Krumbach, Germany, in 1973, Tuchel retired from football at the age of 25 due to persistent knee injuries. He then shifted his focus to coaching, starting with youth teams before gaining recognition as the coach of major European clubs, reports BBC. He is renowned for his success at top European clubs such as Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and Bayern Munich. Tuchel will be the third non-British and first German to become the manager of England’s men's team.

He made his managerial breakthrough with Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga and went on to replicate his success at Borussia Dortmund, where he won the DFB-Pokal in 2017.

However, his international recognition grew during his time at PSG, where he managed some of the world's best players, including Kylian Mbappé and Neymar. Tuchel led the team to a domestic quadruple and guided them to the UEFA Champions League final in 2020.

After PSG, he signed with Chelsea and later Bayern Munich. Under Tuchel’s guidance, England captain Harry Kane had a record-breaking season, scoring 44 goals.

Interestingly, despite his success in football, Tuchel once dreamed of becoming a helicopter pilot when he was young.
