Donald Trump is known for many things - for being a former POTUS and a real estate mogul. But he’s equally famous for making controversial statements. For instance, some of his former White House staff previously revealed that he often spoke about ‘executing people’ when he was angry. In another instance, he was accused of making racial slurs on The Apprentice.

Donald Trump once made Prince William furious over his comments on Kate Middleton

In this long history of making bold statements, Trump once made a comment about Kate Middleton that is understood to have made Prince William furious. According to a new biography, Prince William was not happy when Trump said that Kate Middleton had ‘only herself to blame’ when she was photographed topless in 2012.

Royal biographer Rob Jobson explained that the couple were newlyweds on a vacation in France when the unfortunate incident happened, reports The Independent. It was Prince William and Kate Middleton’s first dissension with the media. Their representatives, lawyers and PR team had to take major steps to stop the photos from getting published. While the UK media outlets turned them down, they were published in France’s Closer Magazine and a regional magazine La Provence.

After the publication of Kate’s topless photos, Trump took to X (then Twitter) and wrote:

Kate Middleton is great – but she shouldn’t be sunbathing in the nude – only herself to blame. Who wouldn’t take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing? Come on Kate!

Jobson now claims that Prince ‘William was reportedly furious’ when Trump wrote that tweet, adding:

The entire affair had left the duchess feeling ‘violated.’

About the whole fiasco

The incident took place when the royal couple was vacationing in the south of France at a chateau owned by Queen Elizabeth II’s nephew Lord Linley. They were on the terrace of the private chateau sunbathing when they were snapped with a zoom lens, reports Sky News.

The paparazzi took pictures of Kate in a bikini sunbathing on the terrace and also a few where she was seen removing her bikini top and relaxing topless on her vacation. The timing of the publication was extremely sensitive as they were published when the couple was midway through a hugely successful Diamond Jubilee tour on behalf of the late Queen, writes HuffPost.

The couple was in Malaysiawhen the pictures were published in French media outlets. It is understood that the UK news outlets turned down the pictures after they realised they were taken on private property and hence, breached the couple’s privacy.

France’s Closer Magazine eventually had to pay €100,000 in damages to William and Kate. The publication’s editor Laurence Pieau, and owner Ernesto Mauri both paid fines of €45,000 (£41,000) - the maximum possible along with the photographers who took it. It is reported that the royal couple asked for €1.5m for their breach of privacy.
