King Charles has bought some properties as well. Indeed, the King owns a small cottage in Romania, a place where he reportedly enjoys peaceful holidays. However, recently, it has been suggested that King Charles has bought a condo in New York for $6 million.
The rumours started after the deed for the three-bedroom apartment was made out to ‘His Majesty the King in Right of Canada’, as per The New York Times. But was it really King Charles, who has an estimated fortune worth £610 million, who made the purchase?
A $6 million New York condo was bought in the name of King Charles
As reported by New York Post, a three-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom flat on Billionaires’ Row in Manhattan has been bought and the new owner has been listed as ‘His Majesty the King in Right of Canada, Represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs’.
This has led many to believe that King Charles has bought the $6.63 million condo, however, that is not the case. According to New York Post, the signature on the deed is from Robert McCubbing, the Senior Trade Commissioner & Director of Trade and Investment at the Consulate General of Canada in New York.
McCubbing spoke with New York Post, explaining that ‘Global Affairs Canada’ had bought the flat and its purpose would be the ‘Official Residence for the Consulate General of Canada in New York’, meaning King Charles will not use it.
King Charles did not buy a $6 million New York flat
Robert McCubbing was asked about King Charles’ involvement in the purchase, and he revealed that it is just ‘standard procedure’ as His Majesty’s status is ‘Head of State of Canada’.
McCubbing explained:
His name is used on legal documentation. It’s a function of Canada being a constitutional monarchy.
Moreover, as per The New York Times, a spokesperson for King Charles has ‘flatly denied’ that His Majesty has bought a condo and referenced a similar rumour concerning another property.
Indeed, in 2015, a 2,600-square-foot condominium directly across from the United Nations had been bought for $7.9 million and the deed was issued to ‘Her Majesty the Queen in Right of New Zealand’, which had led to the same speculation that the late Queen Elizabeth had purchased the property, which she hadn’t.
As per The New York Times, the New York condo had been purchased by the Canadian Government.
