Kate Middleton was supposed to change her name upon marriage
Amidst this, The Sun has confirmed that Kate Middleton was supposed to change her name - the spelling of her first name, to be precise. Born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton, Kate was suggested by King Charles and Queen Camilla to change the spelling of her first name.
In his bombshell memoir Spare, Prince Harry revealed that the Royals asked Kate to spell her full name with K and not C. This comes as there were already ‘too many names in the family beginning with a C.’
The King and Queen were concerned about the cyphers - the personal monogram of a member of the Royal Family.
In his book, Harry wrote:
There were already two royal cyphers with a C and a crown above: Charles and Camilla.
It would be too confusing to have another.
Kate Middleton’s transition from Catherine
While the Princess is popular with Kate, she officially goes by Catherine. The shift from Catherine to Kate happened when she was dating Prince William. However, according to Royal Expert Adam Helliker, Kate wishes to drop the informal moniker and go by the formal name Catherine. Adam said:
I hear that in the past few weeks, the former accessories buyer has quietly informed friends that she would like to drop the informal 'Kate' and in future wishes to be known by her full name: 'Catherine.’
Meanwhile, Princess Kate’s friends told Adam:
Everyone knows it’s about to happen with Kate and William, but we were a little surprised about the request to call her Catherine.
