This year, the charity decided to ask the Princess of Wales to open the telethon with a pre-recorded video. However, viewers were not pleased by the guest appearance and took to social media to voice their opinions.
The Royal Family often come under fire when attending charity events due to the amount of money they have.
Princess Kate opened Children in Need
Princess Kate appeared at the beginning of the telethon in a pre-recorded video revealing that she was ‘delighted’ that Children in Need asked her to open this year’s show.
Princess Kate has always been an advocate for young children, she has even launched her own charity towards early childhood development. When Princess Kate launched her foundation earlier this year she received immense backlash.
In her video, the Princess of Wales highlighted the impact trauma and stress have on children:
Our relationships, surroundings and experiences during the earliest years lay the foundations that shape the rest of our lives.
And yet sadly, we know that for too many people, stressful and traumatic situations in early childhood can cause harm and it can take many years to overcome.
Princes Kate was labelled ‘out of touch’
Children in Need viewers took to social media to express their disdain that a member of the Royal Family was talking about disadvantaged families. Some asked whether the Princess of Wales was going to announce a cut in royal funding:
I hope Kate is going to announce a 10 percent cut in royal funding from public taxes.
Think how much that would raise for charity.
Another added that having Princess Kate open for the telethon was ‘So out of touch’:
What is Kate doing opening Children in Need? So out of touch. Not a good start.
Another pointed out the hypocrisy of someone who lives in several homes asking the public to donate money:
@BBC So Kate, who lives in several homes just popped up on #ChildrenInNeed, last year it raised about £20million.
That's £354million less than we gave the royals. The hypocrisy.
