Meghan Markle has occasionally shared private and intimate moments with her family. With her latest ventures she's been even more open about her life—a move that she has been criticised for as well. However, Meghan has shared more vulnerable moments of her life even before leaving the Firm.
Back in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic was at its peak, Meghan revealed in an open letter published in The New York Times that she had a miscarriage.
Meghan Markle’s open letter
In 2020, Meghan shared with the world the harrowing moment she had a miscarriage, just a few months before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. She explained that the day had started out like any other. She then went to change Archie’s nappy.
This is when everything changed for the former actress. While changing her son’s nappy, she ‘felt a sharp cramp’ and ‘dropped to the floor’ while holding Archie. Meghan wrote that at that moment, she knew something wasn’t right and she was ‘losing her second [born]’.
The Duchess of Sussex then went on to remember her tour in South Africa with Prince Harry and Archie, ‘trying to keep a brave face in the very public eye’. She recalled a journalist who had asked her a very simple question:
Are you OK?
Meghan explained that this simple question ‘helped her the most’. She answered honestly with:
Thank you for asking. Not many people have asked if I’m OK.
Meghan also talked about the grief that comes with losing a pregnancy and that it is something ‘experienced by many’ but is still a taboo topic.
Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few.
Five years later, the Duchess of Sussex revisited that moment once again in the latest episode of her podcast, Confessions of a Female Founder. She discussed the experience with her guest, Reshma Saujani, who has also experienced pregnancy loss.
Meghan Markle talks about her miscarriage
On Tuesday, April 15, Meghan Markle released her latest podcast episode. In her first episode, the mum-of-two talked about the life-threatening disease she developed after pregnancy. Following the pregnancy theme for her second episode, Meghan talks about pregnancy loss.
Meghan brought up the topic with her guest Reshma Saujani, who has suffered several miscarriages, asking if she was ‘comfortable talking about it’. Reflecting on the traumatic situation, Meghan explains she learned ‘to detach’ from it.
I think in some parallel way … you have to learn to detach from the thing that you have so much promise and hope for, and to be able to be OK at a certain point to let something go — something go that you planned to love for a long time.
Saujani joked that Meghan had been reading her diary but also added that no one had ‘said it that way’ to her before.
I don’t think anyone’s seen it that way [or], like, said it that way for me.
Eventually, Harry and Meghan welcomed their rainbow baby, Princess Lilibet, in 2021. Meghan has often talked about how much she enjoys motherhood and has said it is her ‘favourite title’, as per Page Six.
