When Prince Harry decided to quit his life as a senior Royal, he had hoped to keep his honorary military roles along with his position of ceremonial head of the Royal Marines. He wanted to remain the Captain General, however, the Queen stripped him of his titles soon after he quit.

Well-informed decision
King Charles III was announced as the new ceremonial head of the Royal Marines – the role previously held by Harry. The timing of the announcement is rather sensitive considering Prince Harry just announced the details of his ‘heartfelt’ memoir.
However, Mailonline has revealed that the Duke of Sussex was already informed about his father’s decision to take over his previous role before it was announced to the public. The alleged information comes from an unnamed source. Meaning, Prince Harry was kept in the loop regarding the decision of his honorary military roles.
It was previously speculated that Princess Anne would become the first woman to hold the role until King Charles was announced as the Captain General today.
The role was previously held by a succession of sovereigns until Prince Philip was given the role by Elizabeth II in 1953. Prince Harry took over the role from him in 2017 when Prince Philip retired from public life.
Was it a deliberate decision?
The announcement of King Charles as the new Captain General may have come at a sensitive time (announcement of Prince Harry’s memoir), but it is certain that it was not an intentional decision.
Rather it was pre-decided and long-planned that the announcement will be made on October 28 on the 358th anniversary of the founding of the Royal Marines. Hence, The Firm could have previously informed Prince Harry of the decision as well.
