Why are the Cambridges leaving Kensington?
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are moving out of Kensington Palace to Adelaide Cottage on the Queen’s Windsor Estate. The four-bedroom house is only 10 minutes from the Queen’s residence.
According to friends of the Duke and Duchess, this move will allow William and Kate to raise their children in a more rural setting.
BBC News reported that the move sends a message that the Cambridges are content to live in less luxurious accommodation. Admittedly, Adelaide Cottage is a modest accommodation by Royal standards and it is a far cry from their Kensington Palace property or the Sussexes home in California.
Out of touch with the public?
However, the campaign group Republic criticised the move in a press release. They believe it to be ‘shocking’. The cost-of-living crisis has hit the UK hard, and the group has dubbed the royals ‘dishonest’ in saying that the move is a downgrade.
Republic CEO Graham Smith said:
Adelaide is a huge house by any standards.
He also added:
This is the fourth home in addition to the multi-story mansion William and Kate have in Kensington Palace, the 10-bedroom home in Sandringham and the large house they use when in Scotland.
It is worse still to see this spun as moving into a more modest home, when they’re adding a fourth large house to their luxury lifestyle.
The group claims the move will come ‘at great expense’ to the taxpayers, many of who are already struggling to pay their energy bills.
Who is Republic?
Republic is a membership-based campaign group that wants to see the monarchy abolished and replaced by an elected head-of-state.
The campaign group believes that the monarchy is a 'broken institution' and that an elected head of state would better represent the peoples 'hopes and aspirations'. They also believe that it would help 'keep politicians in check'.
