The cottage, constructed in 1831 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville, was once a teahouse for Queen Adelaide. It developed into a dreamy, upmarket guesthouse during the time of Queen Victoria, earning it the same reputation as Frogmore, the residence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Adelaide Cottage’s history
The four-bedroom house, Adelaide Cottage, is a charming Grade II listed house tucked away in Windsor's Home Park. It has a somewhat scandalous past, confirms MailOnline. Here’s how it relates to many different Royal Family members:
Princess Margaret
The house once belonged to Princess Margaret and her lover Peter Townsend in the 1940s. Townsend lived there with his first wife Rosemary, so he could be on hand for the king in his role as equerry. The Queen and her sister would regularly go to the property to make tea in the gardens of the cottage with the Townsends and their young sons.
When pilot Townsend was appointed the King's equerry in February 1944, he already had a young boy named Giles and another child on the way. After three years of marriage amid the tumult of World War II, Adelaide Cottage became the Townsends' first real marital residence.
The Establishment was shaken by Margaret's romance, but she placed duty above passion when she called off her 1955 wedding to divorced Townsend.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
The Grade-II listed home was reportedly offered to Harry and Meghan by the Queen immediately after their nuptials, according to a source. The pair is believed to have gone for a viewing and fell in love with it, but they ultimately relocated to Frogmore Cottage.
