Princess Charlotte’s great-great-grandmother
Elizabeth Bowes Lyon was born on 4th August 1900 and was the fourth daughter of Lord Glamis. The Bowes-Lyon family descended from the Royal House of Scotland and Glamis Castle was their family seat, according to Royal.uk. Glamis Castle, Macbeth’s old home, has been the home of the Queen Mother’s family since the 14th century, notes Express.
Lady Elizabeth was home-schooled and spoke fluent French by age 10. When World War One started, Glamis Castle became a hospital and the then-14-year-old Lady Elizabeth helped assist the patients.
In April 1923, Lady Elizabeth married the then-Duke of York, Prince Albert, at Westminster Abbey. They had two children together, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, who was born at Glamis Castle.
In 1936, after the death of King George V and the subsequent abdication of King Edward VIII, Duchess Elizabeth became Queen Consort.
When King George died in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne and her mother, Elizabeth, became known as the Queen Mother.
