The title of Queen Consort is given to the wife of the ruling monarch. So Queen Elizabeth II made sure that Camilla gets the respect that she deserves as the wife of the King of England. However, according to recent reports Buckingham Palace is hoping to drop Consort from Camilla’s title. This comes after Camilla took the title of Queen Consort as a mark of respect after certain opinions were made about her marriage into the Royal Family.
Previously, the Queen Mother – Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra received the same treatment and were simply referred to by the title of Queen and their Christian name. As such, King Charles is hoping for his wife to get the same respect as his grandmother. Camilla is also one of the Counsellors of State and can now represent the King in cases when he’s unable to, so a name change may eventually be inevitable.
Both – the King and Queen Consort – are ‘very relaxed’ for Camilla to be just known as Queen Camilla, reports The Sun.
When would it happen?
Royal aides are anticipated to gauge the public interest in the new moniker for Camilla for the next few months. The decision may depend on Camilla’s popularity with the public, a source confirmed.
Meanwhile, she would still be addressed as the Queen Consort in formal communications until a decision is made on her title. The palace aims at carefully and quietly dropping ‘Consort’ before King Charles III’s coronation next year.
