The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.
What happened?
On Thursday 8 September, Buckingham Palace released a rare statement sharing doctor’s concerns for the Queen’s health. As a result, Royal family members including Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, rushed to be by her side at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
Well-wishers gathered outside Balmoral Castle and Buckingham Palace. The traditional Changing of the Guard ceremony, which was due to take place outside Buckingham Palace on Friday 9 September, was called off, as reported by the BBC.
The Queen's life
Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born on 21 April 1926 to the Duke and Duchess of York, who would later become King George VI and Queen Elizabeth after the abdication of the Duke's brother, King Edward VIII in 1936.
When her father, King George VI, died in February 1952, Elizabeth became the Queen of the United Kingdom at 25 years old. She was also made the Head of State of 14 other sovereign countries and the Head of the Commonwealth.
Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, on 20 November 1947. When they married, he became Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. They had four children together: Prince Charles,Princess Anne, Prince Andrew,and Prince Edward. Prince Philip passed away on 9 April 2021 at the age of 99-years-old.
Queen Elizabeth II was 96-years-old. In 2022, she celebrated her Platinum Jubilee. The Queen was on the throne for 70 years, making her the longest reigning monarch in British history and the second-longest reigning monarch in world history.
