It was the end of an era. On 14 December 2023, Netflix released the final six episodes of the sixth season of The Crown, its series focusing on the British Royal Family. After focusing at length on the life of Queen Elizabeth II, then that of her son Charles, the show ended by concentrating on the incredible destiny of Prince William, the heir to the throne of England.

In the first episode Season 6 - Part 1, we found him mourning the death of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car accident under the Pont de l'Alma in Paris on 31 August 1997. Adored by the young girls of his generation, who saw in Prince William the beauty and charisma of his mother, he had no interest in women, until the day he crossed paths with the love of his life: Catherine Middleton, known as Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales.
How William met Kate Middleton
Officially, Prince William first crossed paths with Kate Middleton at St. Andrews University in Scotland in 2001. In The Crown, however, they met much earlier, namely in 1996. The commoner was out walking with her mother Carole, when she apparently bumped into Prince William and his mother Princess Diana in London.
In the scene, the then-Princess of Wales and her son are both in the British capital for the sale of the charity magazine The Big Issue. In the show, Diana and Kate exchange a few words.
Diana asks young Kate, just after her purchase:
That's very generous, what's your first name?,
The she hurls at her son,
Say thank you to Kate!
But did this scene really take place?
Kate Middleton never met Princess Diana
At the risk of disappointing fans of The Crown, the answer is... no! The scene has caused quite a stir in the UK, according to Newsweek, which also points out that Kate Middleton herself has said she has never met her mother-in-law. In various interviews, she has always said that she got to know her through William.
This script choice by Peter Morgan, the showrunner of the series, hasn't made viewers very happy. For instance, one X user posted
