The Queen's official tea supplier had weighed in on the great debate of milk first vs water first and their answer has the British fuming as we have all been making our cuppas the wrong way.
Twinings have released the top way to make a brew and while there are many things that we can all agree on there's one thing that will shock you.
Whether you're after an Earl Grey or an English Breakfast, Twinings recommends warming the teapot up first with a bit of hot water—not a bad idea to say the least. The teamakers also claim that you should let the tea steep for four minutes before removing the leaves.
Here's the shocking part: to make the best brew, Twinings advises that you should put your milk in before the tea.
Twinings has backed up their argument by stating:
When adding milk, pour it into the cup before adding your tea. This allows the milk to cool the tea, rather than letting the tea heat the milk.
So how do you make the perfect brew?
Twinings has been the tea of the royals since 1837 and the Director of Corporate Relations, Stephen Twining, is in the 10th generation of the famous tea supplying family.
Stephen revealed to Town & Country magazine the perfect way to make a cup of black tea. It turns out all the goodness comes from patience.
First, to make your brew in a teapot, Stephen suggests to fill it up with hot water to heat it. Then dispose of that water before refilling the kettle and bringing it to boil. Then, immediately pour the boiling water over the teabag and wait for four minutes before serving.
Stephen claimed that 'In tea, colour is not flavour.' Unfortunately, the Twining family member didn't reveal how the Queen likes her tea but it has been rumoured that she's a fan of Earl Grey with a splash of milk and no sugar.
