Queen Elizabeth II was noticeably absent at the baptism of her great-grandson, Archie Harrison, the child of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry this weekend. But she did have a good reason for it.

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was christened on Saturday 6th July 2019 in the private chapel of Windsor Castle. Archie's parents, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made the decision to keep this special day a private affair, with only 25 guests invited to the event.

Many were surprised to discover that Archie's great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, was not among those invited to the ceremony. In fact, Archie's grandfather almost missed out on the event also - as it was originally scheduled for July 5th, when Prince Charles already had a prior engagement.

The christening was pushed back a day to Saturday July 6th so that Charles could attend - but the new date was still not possible for the Queen herself to make it. Her husband, Prince Philip was also not in attendance on the day.

This is not the first time that the royal couple have missed one of their great-grandchildren's christenings. Almost exactly a year ago, they missed the baptism of Prince Louis, Prince William and Kate Middleton's third child. They were, however, present at the baptisms of Prince George and Princess Charlotte in 2013 and 2015 respectively.
