Who is Lady Hussey?
According to reports, Lady Susan joined 'The Firm' in 1960, at the time of Prince Andrew's birth. She was employed to help answer letters.
Lady Susan earned the Queen's trust and became Elizabeth II's 'Number One Head Girl' as she supported the Queen faultlessly. Lady Susan and the then-Prince Charles formed a relationship such that the King asked Lady Susan to be Prince William's Godmother.
Throughout her many years of service, she became quite the expert in 'the inner workings' of the Royal Family and is said to have helped Princess Diana adjust to her new life as a Royal. It is also believed that she helped Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, acclimatise to the Royal way of life. Her role was so vital that she earned herself a portrayal in the Netflix hit series The Crown.
Though her role within the Royal Family has often been discreet, she has accompanied many Royal Family members on outings. The most notable was when she accompanied the Queen to Prince Philip's funeral, showing how important Lady Susan was to the late Queen.
After the Queen's death, King Charles III allowed her to maintain her status in the Royal fold with the honorary position of Lady of the Household. This latest role involved helping to host occasions at Buckingham Palace.
A disgraceful exit from a long career
Despite remaining relatively discreet during her 60 years of service to Queen Elizabeth II, Lady Susan Hussey is now in disgrace after her behaviour towards one of Camilla, Queen Consort's guests, at an event held on Tuesday evening.
According to the victim's account, Lady Susan Hussey repeatedly and aggressively questioned Ngozi Fulani about her background and heritage. In a tweet, Ms Fulani details her conversation with Lady Susan, saying she has overall 'mixed feelings' about her visit to Buckingham Palace.
Lady Susan Hussey is believed to have said after Ms Fulani answered that she was of British nationality:
No, but where do you really come from, where do your people come from?
Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying:
We take this incident extremely seriously and have investigated immediately to establish the full facts. In this instance, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made.
A spokespersonfor Lady Hussey's Godson, Prince William, said:
Racism has no place in our society. The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect.
