Strictly Come Dancing always has a pretty mixed bag of contestants. In the past we’ve seen everyone from soap stars and singers to sporting legends and ex-politicians taking to the dance floor. But this year, producers are apparently keen to shake things up even more by casting a ‘star of the pandemic’.

According to a report by The Sun, bosses wanted to sign Health Secretary Matt Hancock for a stint on the show. However, as a serving MP and cabinet member, his busy schedule means this will be highly unlikely to work out (for this year at least). Now, producers have their eye on Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty.
Chris Whitty for Strictly 2021?
A source who spoke to The Sun revealed:
Eighteen months ago Chris Whitty, Jonathan Van-Tam and Kate Bingham were utter unknowns. Today they’re practically household names. After all the doom and gloom of Covid, it would be brilliant viewing to get one of these three out of their suits and into some sparkles.
They continued: ‘Chris is top of the list, and discreet enquiries will be made over the next few weeks. Obviously it’s all dependent on where we are on the R rate, but landing a star of the pandemic is the goal. Unfortunately it’s been made clear Matt Hancock’s hectic schedule won’t allow for a weekly waltz — so he’s been ruled out.’
Strictly 2021 line up rumours
Who else is rumoured for Strictly Come Dancing 2021? It’s early days yet but a number of other names are already in the frame. Presenters Ben Shepard, Ben Fogle, Maya Jama and Angelica Bell have all been suggested as potential celeb contestants, as have football legend Rio Ferdinand and actor Ralf Little.
