In the clip, we see the story of a young girl who tries a to seduce a beautiful young guy, who turns out to be gay. Holden Nowell, the man in question, isn’t a homosexual and has confessed that this incorrect assumption has not done him well. “I was always the ‘Call Me Maybe’ guy, everywhere I went, and after awhile I got really sick of hearing that. It was really difficult for me and really frustrating” he explained to IheartRadio Canada.

He highlights the fact that of course he isn’t homophobic, but simply doesn’t want to be associated with the LGBTQ community and that it bothers him. More specifically, he was bothered by the fact that his role required him to kiss another man (a scene that was eventually cut in editing). “I was like, I’m going to be completely honest with you, I’m not going to kiss a guy, especially for 500 dollars.” Clearly very affected by this new label that he was given after the video, he states that “I think people should be allowed to love who they want to love, but I love women.” At least he’s made it clear!
