There are several theories circulating around the net as to why this could be. Some theories are more popular than others, such as the one that says only men have them, but unfortunately, even for male characters, their nails disappear, taking us back to square one.
Other people believe that only 'evil' characters have them because they are either long and/or painted. These hypotheses seem to be making good progress, but none have yet been confirmed.
