However, things quickly changed when Joe's reaction to Lucie going on a date with new boy Tommy Fury was seen as viewers to be weirdly possessive after they'd been together for just a day. Joe soon went from fan favourite to series villain as a series of memes - many of which compared Joe to the murderous lead character in Netflix's 'You' - followed.
Whilst Lucie and Joe patched things up when Lucie picked him over Tommy at the first recoupling, things continued to be difficult between them and last week Joe attracted a storm of media attention when an episode saw him asking Lucie to try to hang out with the girls more instead of always being around the boys.
This caused a storm of comments, with many viewers calling Joe out for 'gaslighting' Lucie - and domestic violence charity Women's Aid even released a statement about Joe's 'controlling behaviour'.
It's no secret that the Love Island producers are under more pressure than ever to look out for the Islanders' mental health this year, following their promise to introduce more stringent aftercare procedures. In the light of the heavy backlash against him, Joe has reportedly been kept in a 'safehouse' since leaving the villa, as producers prepare him to face the outside world.
