It’s official – there will be no new series of Love Island this summer. Fans have been wondering what would happen to the seventh series of the hit reality TV show ever since the start of lockdown. But whilst ITV bosses previously seemed to be determined to go ahead with the show, it’s now been confirmed it won’t be happening.

ITV’s Director of Television Kevin Lygo confirmed to The Sun:
We have tried every which way to make Love Island this summer but logistically it's just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority. In normal circumstances we would be preparing very soon to travel out to the location in Mallorca to get the villa ready but clearly that’s now out of the question.
Acknowledging fans’ disappointment, Kevin added:
We are very sorry for fans of the show but making it safely is our prime concern and Love Island will be back stronger than ever in 2021. In the meantime, Love Island fans can still enjoy all six series of Love Island on BritBox.
However, whilst there won’t be a new series until 2021, we may have less than a year to wait until the villa is open again – as producers are hoping to go ahead with another winter series next year. As it stands, TV insiders say that ‘everything will be deferred to the winter version and everyone who was being lined up to appear in this series will be asked to see if they can appear in that series.’
Whilst this news is pretty gutting, the safety of everyone involved has to be the most important thing – and let’s face it, a socially-distant villa or a villa in rainy England just wouldn’t have cut it. The countdown is now on for Love Island’s return in 2021 – when it’s sure to be bigger and better than ever!
