Flaming meteor streaks across the UK night sky: Witnesses claim it was 'so low you could hear it'

Some UK residents were the unsuspecting bystanders to a cosmic event which they would definitely remember for the rest of their life. On 14 September, a huge meteor was spotted streaking through the night sky by people in their homes and backyards. Reports of sightings have since emerged from across the UK.

According to Daily Mail, witnesses claimed that the fireball was 'so low you could hear it.'

UK Meteor Network confirmed the meteor

Immediately after the meteor appeared, the UK Meteor Network was inundated by public reports about the glowing fireball that crashed through the night sky. It appeared around 9 PM at night. The shooting star was also spotted in County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland.

The UK Meteor Network confirmed that the object people saw and heard was indeed a meteor, shortly after 10 pm. In its latest Tweet, UK Meteor Network has said that it received nearly 800 reports of the fireball from all over the UK and they believed it to be space debris.

Eye-witness accounts of the sightings

Since the meteor was so low and loud, there have been many eye-witnesses who have spoken up about the exceptional sighting.

Daily Mail quoted an eye-witness, Alan McGowan, of Dunblane, Stirlingshire, who first thought the glowing object was perhaps a crashing plane or helicopter. He said,

I saw it arc slowly across the night sky as I drove through Dunblane with my dad around 10pm. It was a huge burning ball of green with an orange flaming tail. It was amazing to see. At first we thought it was a crashing plane or helicopter then realised it was likely a meteor.
