It was an unreal scene in Brazil. A 90-year-old woman was pronounced dead and placed in a body bag at the São José regional hospital on November 25. Only two hours later, the staff made a terrifying discovery. Norma Silveira da Silva was still alive. Jessica Martins Silvi Pereira, a friend of the nonagenarian whom she accompanied to hospital, remembers the moment she was found in the body bag.

A sordid story
Closer explains:
Norma was breathing very shallowly and, being unconscious, she couldn't call for help. She tried to breathe, but couldn't. Jessica said she was in the bag from 11.40pm to 1.30am, almost dying and asphyxiated.
Sadly, the Brazilian died the next day and was cremated. Two death certificates were therefore issued: the first by mistake, and the second on the day she actually died.
The first certificate stated that Norma Silveira da Silva had died of an infection. Hospital officials, Brazil's Medical Ethics Committee and the Death Commission are now investigating how she was sent to the morgue while still alive. To this day, the deceased's family still do not know the reason for her death.

Unfortunately, this medical error is not an isolated case in Latin America. Last June, in Ecuador, a 76-year-old woman was pronounced dead and placed in a coffin. Her loved ones were horrified when Bella Montoya began banging on the inside of her coffin during the wake, after spending five hours inside. Sadly, she passed away a week later.
