Are you likely to go to prison? Your chances are higher if you have this name, study suggests

A study done by security system Protection1 shows that there might be a link between what you are named and your chances of being incarcerated.

Not only that, the study also reveals what name fits what crime. The website of the security system also allows you to search your own name and find out what crime you would be most likely to go to prison for.

This study may seem superfluous but a TikToker who is a former inmate does reveal that some of the results are found to be true.

How to establish the list of names

In order to conduct this study, Protection1 ‘combed through’ both arrest warrants and social security administration’s list of top names of the last 100 years. They then compared the names and established the list.

The research, though entertaining, doesn’t actually claim to predict the future. Instead it highlights a pattern.

Top 20 of criminal names

Thanks to their research, Protection1 has been able to build a list of the most common names for criminals.

At the very top of the list is Jeremy. This one is a little bit ironic because the name Jeremy comes from Old English and signifies ‘lifted up by God.’ Then at number 2, we find Johnny. Completing the podium is Randy.

According to this study a pattern starts to appear. They explain:

All are male (or gender-neutral, in Terry’s case). (...) Interestingly, 9 of the 20 names start with a “J,” and 9 of the 20 end with a “y.” (...) The majority contain two syllables – only Jeremy, Timothy, Joshua, and Christopher have three.

However, do not think that women have been spared by the study.

What about women criminals?

Women's names start to appear once you look at the most common names by crime. Protection1 has established 7 areas of crime: drugs, robbery, assault, murder, fraud, driving related and parole/court date violation.

So what are the crimes women commit?

According to the study women are most likely to commit fraud and parole/court date violation. More specifically, women named Tiffany, Kelly and Samantha commit fraud while Ambers will not show up to court.

Can this study be trusted?

If we were to judge whether or not this study can be trusted, we would look at how it was first established. If what Protection1 states is true, then it seems like the study was done thoroughly and based on facts that happened throughout a significant amount of time.

But what better to verify something than practice. TikToker and former inmate Amanda Dove (user name @prison_story) confirms the results of the story. Indeed, they say:

At the top, we have Jeremy which is so ironic because I used to get in trouble with a Jeremy

It should be noted that Amanda Dove was arrested for armed robbery while intoxicated by drugs and alcohol. We are specifying because, according to the study conducted by Protection1, Amandas are most likely to be arrested for drug related crimes as well as robbery and assault.

Just one more proof that this study could actually turn out to reveal true facts.
