Cherylin Hall, 57, is a native of Corby, Northamptonshire, England. Born as a male named Tony, she has always felt an inner femininity. But as a young person in the 1970s, she was terrified of being rejected by the world because of her transgender identity:

When I was young, there were no names for people like me.

While she was still a man, Cherylin got married, and she remained Theresa's husband for over 30 years. Cherylin was therefore in a heterosexual marriage. But this marriage materialized as a reflection of her deepest aspiration...

Following Theresa's death in 2019, Cherylin began her journey to womanhood.

Cherylin has felt like a woman since she was a child

In my mind, I've always grown up as a woman.

From an early age, Cherylin discreetly practiced the art of dressing up as a woman. She recalls with nostalgia the day when, at the age of 7, she wore a pink tutu to school. During her early childhood and teenage years, she was forbidden to go outside in 'women's clothing'.

When she met Theresa 30 years ago, Cherylin fell in love with her because 'she wanted to be her'. This is eventually what helped Cherylin break out of her shell and become the woman she was always meant to be.

They met in a pub, and Cherylin told the Daily Mail about her feelings at the time:

She was 5'11'' tall, blonde and always wore heels and a dress. That's exactly what I wanted and what I wanted to be. I think that's part of the reason I fell in love with her - I wanted to be her.

But this wish was no secret. From the early days of their relationship, Cherylin revealed to Theresa the femininity that lay within her. She was often faced with the challenge of demonstrating to others the woman within her.

However, this admission was not always easy for Theresa.

She put up with it for a year or two. But in the end, she knew it was much more than that. It caused a lot of problems in our married life and was at the heart of most of our arguments.

The transformation started in 2019

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, Theresa passed away at the age of 54.

She was only 54 when she died, and I thought life was far too short. I just had to take the reins, and that's when something clicked. I revisited many of the places we'd been to over the years. I remembered some of the things we'd done together, because I knew that part of my life was about to disappear.

So, in 2019, Cherylin sought medical expertise, resulting in a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Following Theresa's tragic passing, Cherylin chose to publicly embrace her femininity:

I've spent this year knowing that I'm no longer going to be Tony, but Cherylin, and throughout this year I'm obviously still grieving, but also filled with excitement.

While Cherylin confesses that it's complicated to live one's femininity without suffering the gaze of others, she doesn't regret her choice and loves that her femininity is now out in the open:

Every time I go out, couples elbow each other, laughing and giggling, and I can imagine what they're saying. But I have to be myself, put on a brave face and pretend everything's okay. I think transgender women have a place in this world. We're just misunderstood.
