Stepping out for a smoke
While the train was stationed at the platform, the passenger who had boarded the train with his baby placed the child's seat on the train and went out to smoke a cigarette.
The irresponsible father got out of the train carriage and lit his cigarette whilst the train started up. When he realised that the train was leaving with his child inside, CCTV footage caught him as he tried to run behind the departing train, banging on the windows for it to stop, but it was too late. One passenger tried to open the doors for the panicked father, but the train was already leaving and there was nothing he could do.
A happy ending
Luckily for the child, another passenger on the train who saw the scene alerted the train operator before they travelled too far. The driver returned to Windermere station where the incident had occurred. The baby was returned safe and sound to his father.
